💡 What is Empathy?

Empathy is a Relationship Building talent within CliftonStrengths.

People with strong empathetic talents can understand the emotions of others by putting themselves in their shoes. They can easily imagine themselves in another person's life or situation.

Empathy is not synonymous with sympathy , nor does it mean that you agree with or justify the behavior of others. Instead, it provides a deeper understanding that helps you hear unspoken questions, recognize unexpressed needs, and find the right words to express feelings. As a result, many people naturally seek you out to be heard and understood.

✨ The Power of Empathy

When used properly, Empathy can become a “superpower” that helps you:

  • Bring emotional intelligence to work and life.

  • Recognize needs, unspoken questions, and underlying emotions .

  • See the world through other people's eyes , broaden your perspective.

⚠️ Blind Spots - Blind spots to avoid

Empathy is a wonderful talent, but if you're not careful, you can fall into a few “traps”:

  • Emotional Overload : Taking in too many other people's states can leave you mentally exhausted.

  • Sympathy : Avoid falling into pity, because empathy is understanding and sharing, not defending.

  • Over-Trusting : Believing that everyone has good intentions can cause you to overlook unhealthy behavior.

🛠️ How to hone Empathy

You can start with simple things:

  • Share without words : Use eye contact, facial expressions and posture to make others feel understood.

  • Ask listening questions : For example, “How are you feeling?” or “How is this affecting you?” to help others express themselves.

  • Trust your intuition : Take note of a hunch about a situation and proactively provide support or warning before it escalates.

💡 This is just a small part of how to develop Empathy. In Vietnam Strengths Academy workshops, you will be equipped with specific methods to maximize Empathy and other strengths.
